Texture plays a key role if you want to make a space feel cozy, inviting, and enchanting. Texture is one of the elements in the palette of an interior designer. You can create interesting combinations of texture by using different materials and finishes.

Together with our Exploration Designer, Simone Stavenuiter and Design Engineer Mathijs de Schipper, we wanted to explore the what, how, and why of texture in lighting and find out more about how this fascinating element can affect the look and feel of a space. Texture is something we give a great deal of thought to at Philips MyCreation from a design and production point of view, so we have also chosen some of our own textural favourites.

What is texture in lighting design?

A lot of us will think of the physical look and feel of fabrics and other materials when we hear the word texture.

However, in lighting design, texture also refers to the way in which light is used to create visual interesting surfaces and depth in a material, especially in decorative lighting fixtures. Texture can interact with the light itself in many different ways to create special light effects when lid." Said Simone.

"Texture can have a very fine structure like a brushed surface finish, or it can have a bigger structure and then it becomes like a pattern. You can express different aesthetic styles with texture, such as natural, luxury or modern depending on the qualities of the texture.”

In Mathijs’s opinion, texture in lighting design offers the possibility to change the way lights travels through the luminaires. "For example, we designed this crushed glass texture using our 3D printing technology; the light shines through the irregular lines and creates gentle sparkles through the texture, which is perfect for adding a cozy ambiance to your interior."

Why is textured lighting so important in interior design?

Have you ever looked at your space and felt that something was missing but found it difficult to pinpoint what it is?  Maybe the colour scheme, furniture, and décor items are nicely put together but what could add an extra decorative element? The answer is special textured lighting!

A textured lamp, according to Simone, who also enjoys interior design, effortlessly brings balance and harmony to a room especially when the textures harmonize with other existing textures in a space.

"Think of the texture of a carpet, the grain of wood or the woven effect of a wicker basket; a textured lamp can add visual impact in your space both in terms of its look and feel and the way it casts light." She added.

How to get started with Philips MyCreation textured lamp?

We have several textures which are designed to fit different interior styles. For example if you have a Scandinavian or natural interior the open weave and the natural line texture would work very well. By contrast if you have an industrial styled interior the crushed glass texture on the Lusenna pendants complete the urban atmosphere.
