Possibilities remain endless as current technology evolves. While there are many things you can 3D print, lamps are particularly exciting because they can be made more creatively and sustainably with this technology.
Together with our Design Engineer Mathijs de Schipper and Exploration Designer, Simone Stavenuiter, we want to explore how we can use 3D printing to create texture in lighting and find out more about the possibilities of this technology.
What is 3D printing lighting?
3D printing lighting refers to the use of 3D printing technology to create customized lighting fixtures or parts. The process is known as additive manufacturing which successive layers or droplets of a certain material are Deposited down under computer guidance.
How 3D printing technology is changing texture design?
3D printing technology is revolutionizing the way designers create textures.
"With 3D printing technology, we can design and create textures with a high degree of accuracy, precision, and repeatability. It also maximizes our design space and create hybrid textures that are impossible to create with traditional manufacturing methods, for example our open weave texture," Mathijs explained.
The weave texture is one of Philips MyCreation's new textures, and is utilised on the Mandala Table Lamp. Simone Stavenuir, our designer who came up with the idea, said that she was inspired by knitting and basket weave patterns.
"In the past, you could only make this type of textures with rattan or moulds, but now you can use 3D printing to make any kind of texture and to adapt to different lighting effects, it is really changing the design process of lighting."
What is Philips MyCreation's textures design process?
Mathijs, our design engineer who converts ideas into real designs, said that the design process begins with mood boarding.
"With mood boarding, we want to know what kind of light expression we want to achieve and how the surface texture should fit into our aims. We then draw some ideas and begin prototyping with 3D printers. Then, using a bulb, we test it to see how the texture appears at a larger scale on the luminaires." The design team will then refine until they are satisfied with the final product before launching it internally.
What is the benefit of 3D printing technology in lighting design?
One of the biggest benefits of 3D printing in lighting design is the ability to quickly prototype new designs. “In the past, lighting designers had to create multiple physical prototypes by hand, which was both time-consuming and expensive. With 3D printing, designers can quickly create and test multiple prototypes in a fraction of the time it would take with traditional methods. This allows designers to iterate and refine their designs quickly, leading to better end products.” said Mathijs.
Additionally, the significant advantages of 3D printing technology is the ability to create textures with many light effects. Mathijs explained, "Unlike traditional manufacturing methods, 3D printing technology enables designers to create textures in all three dimensions and play with the thickness of the material. The textures can wrap around the surface of a product or object, creating a more organic and natural look and feel."
The future of texture design with 3D printing technology
As 3D printing technology continues to advance, the possibilities for texture design are endless. Designers will be able to create increasingly complex and intricate textures that can be customized for specific products or objects. They will also be able to print textures in multiple colors, making it possible to create highly realistic textures that mimic natural materials that enhance the ambience of one's space.
