"Nets are the main tools used by fishermen to earn a living, but fishing nets waste is a genuine problem here in Cornwall due to the lack of recycling infrastructure. Around the world, most of the fishing nets were burnt, put into landfill, or worst of all, dumped into the ocean, casing massive environmental problems." — IAN FALCONER, FOUNDER OF FISHY FILAMENTS LTD.
The Hidden Threat in Our Oceans
The world is facing a serious problem of ocean pollution caused by discarded fishing nets, also known as ghost nets. These nets, made of synthetic materials such as nylon, continue to float in the ocean long after they have been abandoned, entangling and killing marine life.
The problem is massive, according to a report by UNFAO, with an estimated 640,000 tonnes of fishing gear being lost or abandoned in the oceans each year, the equivalent of 55,000 double-decker buses.
But what if there was a way to turn these discarded nets into something beautiful and useful? That's where Philips MyCreation comes in.
Coastal Breeze Collection are created using 100% traceable fishing nets thanks to the collaboration with Fishy Filaments in Cornwall, United Kingdom. These fishing nets, which were discarded by fishermen, will now be used to make new sustainable products. This is a first for our brand and the lighting industry as a whole.
Wastes become wonders thanks to 3D printing technology.
The whole process involves sorting, cleaning, and melting to make 100% recycled filaments. These filaments are used to print our Coastal Breeze series lamps.
Although the process has a few more steps than non-recycled plastic, it is worth the effort. It is a significant step toward saving the environment while creating beautiful lighting products for the home.
Recycling fishing nets allows consumers to contribute to cleaning the ocean and helps fishing communities create value from their used fishing nets.
"EVERY YEAR, 200,000 TONNES OF NEW FISHING NETS ARE MADE, AND THEY TAKE MORE THAN 150 YEARS TO BREAK DOWN. WE COULD DEFINITELY REMOVE A NATION-SCALE AMOUNT OF EMISSIONS FROM THE CLIMATE EMERGENCY IF WE START RECYCLING THEM NOW."
